I think part of the problem (and I've just sort of come to this realization recently) is that comics writers are too involved in their own little world. The minute creativity (or academia, or music, or whatever) is isolated, it stagnates becuase then it's only created for colleagues, not the public. Part of the fun of the Silver Age (for me) was seeing references to other areas of human culture: history, literature, science. There's none of that now. No outside ideas are being referenced in comics, besides a few pop culture references. DC's writers need to pick up a non-comic book and start reading.
