Luke over at the Hawkman blog Being Carter Hall first brought this art to my attention
last December, but I figured I'd sit on a repost here until Black Lantern Martian Manhunter month. Brooklyn's own Ulises Farinas first posted the piece on his blog on 11/22/2009, and the internet just lapped it up.
Here's the artist on the piece:
I started reading Blackest Night from DC in the past week, and so far, its been the only big giant crisis crossover event that hasn’t completely irritated me. Actually, i like it. So i decided to draw this. Hope you like it.
You know, that's pretty much what J'onn's been doing since this whole thing started, Hanging out with Black Hand, waiting for something to happen.
ReplyDelete"Grah! I'm more powerful than Superman! I actually appeared in this crossover for a little bit early on, whereas he's been totally absent. Fear me!"
ReplyDeleteAnd then he has all of zero lines because Johns has other things to do. Which is fair enough really.
ReplyDeleteAnd after reading the first issue, here I was thinking he'd be the star of the series or something and then he just disappeared.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he took a furlough into Denver to haunt some old police buddies?
I finally read the terrible World War III mini-series this week. Maybe J'Onn was visiting his old friend and former crimefighting partner in the Denver Police Department. You know, that guy. The one who, to my recollection, made his first and last appearance in the mini-series over the course of a few panels? I think his name was Peter?
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see a full writeup from you about WWIII. At first I was all happy with it because he starred in it, and then I started having second thoughts...
ReplyDeleteOf course, THAT guy. THAT guy and J'onn go WAY back. What, a few panels isn't enough to garner a complete response of pure bittersweet wistfulness and longing in your cold, cold heart at the kinship and camaraderie that J'onn shared with THAT guy?? Man, there is just no hope for you.
I was more bothered by J'onn's tone of "oh, the horror." As if the last survivor of Mars, who spent years on Apokalips dealing with all kinds of insanity, is going to be sent into a paralyzing existential crisis by Black Adam's "Dark soul." A weak explanation for the upcoming "Brave new direction."
ReplyDeleteI actually still enjoy almost all of the Infinite Crisis-on stories, but there are some clear weaknesses, and really, much of the DCU fell under that same malaise. Hopefully we've passed the nadir.
"...dealing with all kinds of insanity, is going to be sent into a paralyzing existential crisis by Black Adam's "Dark soul."
ReplyDeleteHey, that's a really good point. I didn't think of that, but that makes sense...
I am hoping that we've turned the corner in terms of DCU's malaise of darkness. I am so hoping we're past that.
I mean to discuss this in the upcoming review, but could you guys tell me how Black Adam even did that? Power of Zeus? WTF?
