I haven't done a M'gann M'orzz Miss Martian Monday in a while, mostly due to middling interest and my loss of a source of free reference material. I have some leftover stuff I'll post over time, and drop numbers like this on occasion. While paging through the art blog of Jun Bob Kim, I almost went right past this piece, thinking it paired the worst Batgirl ever with Supergirl for the latest, lamest World's Finest with breasts team. Instead, we have a more curious combo of a female Batman with barely any connection to the Dark Knight Detective, and a female Martian Manhunter who at best has met the Alien Atlas in passing so far. Largely afterthoughts, this is a dour duo, left out in the cold, rainy night. Sipping the warm elixir of their small fan bases, Stephanie tells Megan of her inevitable sales baiting rape/torture/murder and outrage-induced resurrection. Morse reminds her non-college that she's already half crazy and a killer herself, and lays odds on her probable heel turn. Mary Marvel is out there somewhere, noting the truth in their words, and how much Miss Martian owes her for the costume and basic personality...
I went on a bit of a Jun Bob Kim kick today, so I recommend you peep his site at the link above, or check out a few more of my posts:

I hate Miss Martiann so much. I hate the whole idea of her. I think it was the creators just trying to take an easy way out and give the Teen Titans a member like Martian Manhunter (like how they have Robin for Batman and Superboy for Superman). Does anyone else agree or do you guys just think Iam an idiot?
ReplyDeleteI don't hate her, but my efforts to like her have only yielded "meh." I'm waiting for her to do something worthwhile, but so far, she's a cliché collection. Hopefully, the cartoon will figure out what she's supposed to be.
ReplyDeleteI for one can't bring myself to fully hate either of them. I think Miss Martian just needs some pow-wow/adventures with the man himself and she'll be totally alrightsville with me. While Cassandra was the best executed Batgirl, and Babs is just a great character all around, Stephanie is rather likable. But then, I'm a sucker for girls like her.
ReplyDeleteI'm not that keen on her, either, only because I think she waters down the concept of who the Martian Manhunter is. Plus, I could be wrong, but she seemed to be created on a whim. (In honor of some guy's girlfriend.)
ReplyDelete"Morse reminds her non-college that she's already half crazy and a killer herself" You know, this brought up and interesting thought to mind: what's the ratio of male vs. female heroes who've gone psycho on their teammates?
I don't hate Stephanie either, but she feels like a placeholder for the next model. I never warmed to Dixon's Robin, so Spoiler never had a chance. Barbara will always be my favorite Batgirl, but she's moved past that stage, and I thought Cassandra did a commendable job in the role. Plus, Caine really had a style and an origin all her own, independent of the Bat-Family. Her dismissal was a real shame.
ReplyDeleteAs for Miss Martian, she's a Titan. Her death and resurrection and death and heel turn and rebirth and marriage and another heel turn and widowing and revision and... are assured...
I like the Bat-Thermos. How does Bruce Wayne help pay for his Batman activities? MERCHANDISING!
