More Manhunting on eBay!
You are bidding on a 2010 SUPER POWERS - MARTIAN MANHUNTER LithoPrint featuring The Man from Mars. The print celebrates DC's 75th Anniversary and used the vintage Super Powers artwork, printed on a very heavy, quality paper. Absolutely fantastic lithoprint, measures 14" x 20" - Near Mint condition.
1) What the frigging frag is a "LithoPrint?" Webster's defines a lithograph as "a print made by lithography," that process being "printing from a plane surface (as a smooth stone or metal plate) on which the image to be printed is ink-receptive and the blank area ink-repellent." Therefore, "LithoPrint" is either an oxymoron or an obfuscation.
2) If the print is from 2010, why is the copyright date 1984?
3) There's no way a high quality Martian Manhunter print was produced in an English language country in 1984. Maybe if it had an "Ajax" logo, I'd buy it. Man, I'd really like to see an Ajax logo, come to think of it.
4) Assessing points 1-3, I must conclude the legality of these prints (and there are a couple dozen different ones featuring Super Powers characters) is at best dubious.
5) I burn for this. If I had $20 to blow on a poster that I won't even hang anytime soon (frames aren't cheap, and space is limited,) it would be mine. I can't graduate soon enough.
If you buy your own lithoprintery machine and make illegal lithoprints, now we're talking.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though, couldn't you just print that out on your own printer and it would probably look the same?
I'd need that boss reference of theirs and a Kinkos* to blow it up right. For about $35. Hey, waitaminute... Oh, right, 14" x 20". Isn't that about the size of a page of comic art?
ReplyDelete*No one is going to call it FedEx Office. What were they thinking?
well if nothing else at least you were able to blog about this really nice piece of nostalgic art which didn't cost you anything except some time. Super Powers was also a cool 80's toy line. MM was among the best sculpted figures in the set. Siskoids blog of Geekery had a recent posting about those DC Super Powers action figures you all might find interesting: http://siskoid.blogspot.com/2011/02/reign-of-supermen-106-super-powers.html

ReplyDeleteChapter Five: The questionably legal knock off merchandise.
I'd still totally buy this thing, even with its shadiness and smaller size. I love the Super Powers Collection and all those glorious DC style guides from the late 70s/early 80s. Actually the new style guides are also really happening.
ReplyDeleteJust to put it out there, I bought one of these at Comicpalooza 2013. Despite carrying a portfolio case with me for art commissions, the dimensions of this thing were too big to fit, and the top of mine got jacked up. I ended up trimming it with a cutting board at FedEx Office while making color photocopies of the aforementioned commissions to scan into my computer. There was a lot of unnecessary negative space, so it didn't hurt much. The boards are good quality stock, by the way. The colors pop and the digital artifacts are only really present on the Super Powers logo.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I only paid $10.
