2011 Miss Martian “Puppy Love” art by Ryan Bullard

I added "M'gann M'orzz" to my browser dictionary in a bid to finally learn how to spell her name correctly, instead of Googling for correction every dang time. All those years of snubbing my nose at people who couldn't spell "J'Onn J'Onzz" right come back to haunt me. Still, if you spell Spider-Man as one word without a hyphen, I'm prepared to pull you geek credibility card. We have to have standards, people!

Anyway, while fishing around for something different and M'gann M'orzz related, I stumbled upon this piece by Ryan Bullard. Well actually, that's a lie. I stumbled upon a "Comic Twart" style round robin blog that had a Miss Martian theme in the last few weeks, and want to steal some more from them before I have to cop to it. That's why I'm sending you to Ryan Bullard's blog, to pimp while simultaneously misdirecting. I like this number because M'gann (right the 1st time!) only gets really mad in defense of a poor wittle pug menaced by evil White Martians. I also dig that M'orzz (2 for 2!) is fighting against her own people, a choice I don't believe she's had to make inside a comic (setting aside her decapitating herself from the future, but she was still basically humanoid.) It makes her feel more like a proper extension of the Martian Manhunter family when she's engaged in a race war, right?

"All right then. Firstly, I just have to say I know nothing about Miss Martian. So if you're a fan of hers and this is just not something she would ever do, it's not my fault man. From the bits and pieces I gathered from the mighty interweb, I understand she's the Martian Manhunter's niece, and I'm assuming she has the same powers as him, which is, well, every power ever. Also, she likes puppies. And I understand, she's not really the same type of Martian as J'onn at all, but the evil rival White Martians.. or something. DC gives me a headache..

Anyhoo, here's some White Martians attacking another White Martian disguised as a Green Martian disguised as human protecting a fat pug. Enjoy."

  1. I always want to put to n's in "J'onzz." And I still can't bring myself to capitalize the "O" because some visual habit makes me see his name as basically "JO JO" when spelled that way.

Looking at the artist's description of the piece, it would seem the idea that M'gann is J'onn's niece has already seeped into the public consciousness. I wonder if DC will break down and actually retcon her that way in the comics.

    And that poor Pug!! lol.

  2. Liss, don't sweat the caps, as they're the subject of "controversy." DC Comics has randomly spelled it either way since the '70s. I use it as a way of differentiating between the Silver Age "J'onn J'onzz" and the Bronze-Modern Age "J'Onn J'Onzz" when discussing both, but that's arbitrary on my part.

  3. That's interesting I didn't realize that there was a time difference when they started spelling it that way. Makes sense now.

  4. I never noticed the difference in time periods, either. But I'm a little lacking in Bronze Age reading.

    Interesting!

  5. Commander Benson's Notebook: "...By Any Other Name..."
Who put the capitol "O" in J'Onn J'Onzz, and why they were wrong to do so!
