"Luther Mannkin is a boy from Harlem who is about to meet a very special friend. It is Jemm, the Prince of Saturn, an alien of extraordinary powers that has come to the Earth fleeing extinction and a fratricidal war which he cannot leave behind easily. So begins the adventures of a misunderstood hero who has a punch-out with Superman himself, in a collection written by Greg Potter and drawn by the great Gene Colan Planeta DeAgostini collects now in this single volume."
That's right, a 293 page hardcover collection of the entire Jemm, Son of Saturn twelve issue maxi-series for 30€, which is roughly $30-40, depending on exchange rates. The book is printed on vastly superior paper (as in white, as opposed to the deep tan newsprint I've been pulling my scans from) and has crisp image reproduction quality. There's even an introduction and creator biography pages. By the All-Maker!
And there's no English hardcover counterpart? Interesting! You've posted a few Martian Manunter-related things from Brazil, too, right? I wonder how J'emm and J'onn got that kind of exposure down there.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever come across any nice hardcover editions of any MM solo series in another language?
I'd have to check on whether they're hardcovers, but the same publisher collected the Ostrander/Mandrake series in two volumes and American Secrets in another. Ajax and Detective Marciano are big in Brazil and Spain, it seems. I expect it's less about exposure than J'Onn having a more European storytelling sensibility than many other dumb American heroes, who win every fight and do it with their fists.
ReplyDeleteHoly snip! This looks beautiful. Yeah, J'onn and Jemm are both less obviously American-with-a-capital-A, so it makes sense they would be more accessible to other cultures.
ReplyDeleteThey collected American Secrets? Nice. Now when it that going to happen here?
