"A totally new version of the Crime Syndicate.
Ultraman
Powergirl
Sinestro Corps Batman
D'kay D'razz
Reverse Flash"
The Aussie artist sometimes known as "Shadowrenderer" is on to something here. D'Kay D'Razz was a sucky derivative character in an ultimately pointless event maxi-series (aside I suppose from restoring Aquaman to a greater degree of respectability.) However, D'Kay in some sort of partnership as a representative of the Vile Menagerie could be much more interesting, and
Brightest Day gave her uncommon visibility...
Shadowrenderer has put together a nice team,I like em. Brightest Day was pointless, however D'Kay did make an impression. I like Cyan better but D'Razz is a terrorizing villain.
ReplyDeleteCa'yan was pretty silly in her own right, so it's hard to seriously judge one over the other. I do think they contrast well, with Cay'an seeming intellectual but soulless and inscrutable, while D'Kay chooses an inhuman appearance but is gripped by a comprehensible, almost sympathetic madness.
ReplyDeleteI don't know; I think I would be happier if both D'Kay and Cay'an just faded away into a retcon. J'onn deserves some better villains.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Not to go off-topic, but I can't contain myself: I just got my issue of JLA #1. Has anyone read it? From what J'onn says in one panel, I have a feeling where this characterization is going.
ReplyDeleteI've read it, but I'm not catching your specific reference.
