2013 Black Lantern Martian Manhunter “We Can Be Heroes: Rise” silhouette by Steve Garcia

I don't think I've ever mentioned this publicly, but I appreciated J'Onn J'Onzz being made the pale rotting face of the Black Lantern Corpse in the big Blackest Night crossover. He was the first zombie corpsman out of the gate, got to manhandle Green Lantern and the Flash, and the whole thing transitioned the Manhunter from Mars away from his dumb "One Year Later" Conehead design back toward the classic (resurrected) Alien Atlas. Speaking of which, Steve Garcia did a variation on the Manhunter "Empathy" piece that traded out the Justice League Unlimited animated Martian soldier for the "natural form" seen in The New Frontier. Peep that here, and/or demonstrate your own empathy through a donation to We Can Be Heroes. Just imagine that the silhouette that they used for the New 52 Martian Manhunter action figure packaging is transposed over Cyborg, if that helps.

  1. Frank, I am glad that J'Onn got to come back to a more classic look in Blackest Night. Mind you. I also like the Brightest Day and current outfits. My hope is that once the ill conceived Justice League of America title is replaced with Justice League United, that we will see J'Onn come into his own. (J'Onn's background screams for some great stories and I hope that the Justice League United writers will study his history and be inspired by it. Also, I would love to see some more battles with J'Onn and Despero.)

  2. The Black Lantern one and the other one are both really nice. I'm always one for minimalist art. I'm glad it's for a good cause, too...

I remember being all excited that J'onn finally came back during the whole Black Lantern War. Good times.

I checked out this guy's Deviant Art account and he's even got an Adam Strange one. What are the odds of that? Warms my jaded little heart.

  3. Will, I'm happy with most anything that doesn't make J'Onn look like a VeggieTales apostate. I had hopes for Stormwatch and JLofA, and I have hopes for JLU, but I'll be tradewaiting on account of twice bitten quite shy now. Please more Despero, less Stargirl in round three?

Liss, I thought of you when I saw the Adam Strange. Should have linked to it, but glad you found it on your own.

  4. It's okay--searching for it is half the fun. I'm always impressed by artists who represent the minor characters I love.

VeggieTales or a green Ki Adi Mundi; J'onn deserves to be neither.
