"Here’re some commissioned drawings I recently wrapped up: the Silver Age JLA. I read mainly Marvel stuff growing up and admittedly don’t know a whole ton about Silver Age DC stuff, but I really enjoyed doing these and I really gained an appreciation for these great costumes. I’m also pretty happy with the way these turned out."
Ben Towle is the creator of the graphic novels Midnight Sun and Farewell, Georgia. J'onn J'onzz is part of a set of eight pieces, and ordering information for work of your own can be found by clicking the picture above.

It's kind of off-beat, and a little creepy at the same time. Pretty unique stuff...I wouldn't mind seeing more of J'onn in this style, if only to see what Ben Towle could do with him.

I'm posting Ben's sketch of Black Canary on Monday. I think this series is really unique and fun, and I think his Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter stand out above the rest.

Strictly speaking, it's not a Silver Age J'onn J'onzz drawing if he has a collar. Also, you can't have the beetlebrow without the early Certa overbite. Valid and well appreciated as Bronze/Pre-Infinite Crisis Manhunter, my favorite period. I like the Alien Atlas drawing well and above the rest on pure aesthetics, beyond my obvious character preference. I thought I was going to do a multiple blog spotlight on these pieces, but it didn't pass the second gateway to meet my criteria.

#1: Feature Martian Manhunter in any capacity.

#2: Do a Wonder Woman drawing I like. She looks skinnier than Gal Gadot. Olive Oyl isn't an Amazon. Dinah would kick the stuffing out of her.

I haven't seen too many pictures of Gadot at Wonder Woman yet. (Just some random picture in a blue shirt + tiara.) I think the low expectations I have for B v S is quite liberating. I'm not expecting much at all.

Though Lynda Carter wasn't too imposing, and she made it work. Of course, aesthetics have changed in 30+ years.

Lynda Carter had about twenty pounds on Gal Gadot at the same height (5' 9",) and had a very tall male co-star in Lyle Waggoner (6'4",) so there's a reasonable comparison. However, Carter wasn't playing off the juiced up beefcakes of today, or expected to perform anywhere near the same caliber of stunts. Gadot already looked thin and lacked muscle tone next to Jordana Brewster, a very trim actress. Next to the comparatively normal, healthy Amy Adams, she'll look like Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club. Rachel McLish is 59, and still looks more like Wonder Woman than Gal Gadot, and based on the Fast & Furious movies, she's a better actress, too. Despite being in an action franchise for multiple installments, Gadot moves stiffly and awkward, and pulls this weird blank gaunt face that's meant to show intensity. I'm still on the fence about showing up for a screening of that movie. Cellar expectations.
