Martian Sightings for July, 2010

Sorry for yet another late post. I spent too much time this weekend reorganizing my comic collection and "banking" a series of Monday Miss Martian posts; not enough on this week's posts here & abroad. Anyway, what a difference a month makes, as my previous pessimism gives way to verifiable appearances of a living J'Onn J'Onzz... now with pants, as "Tomasi teased an upcoming "Ralph Loren tie-in" issue as a joke." It seems pretty certain there will be little-to-no Martian Manhunter in "Justice League: Generation Lost," so I've removed it from our monthly listings.

Ha! I was just about to post that MM Blammoid on my blog. I don't know whether it's cute or really, really dumb.

"It seems pretty certain there will be little-to-no Martian Manhunter in "Justice League: Generation Lost," so I've removed it from our monthly listings." Wait, what? JLI without J'onn? @#$(*&! I'm going to start flogging myself.

"Martian Manhunter...discover the price for their resurrections...and why they may be doing more harm than good to the world." I saw this last night in the solicits and I really don't like how that sounds. This means he's going to die again eventually, doesn't it?

Did I just kill your Martian Manhunter Lives optimism?

Have you been enjoying REBELS? I've been liking it even though Adam Strange is such a minor player, and hasn't been characterized enough. Despero's appearances have been good stuff, though.

"The Curly Hair issue! The kids line up for Kid Flash’s special new salon treatment. Will all the Titans wind up doing new ’dos?" I think the grown-up books should revolve around these kinds of conflicts. What a wonderful world that would be. :)

I love Giffen sometimes, but without DeMatteis to check his baser impulses, I'd rather he steer clear of J'Onn J'Onzz. Factor in Judd WhenEcch, and that goes quadruple. The team is Booster, Jaime-Beetle, Fire, Ice, and Power Girl gets in there somewhere. The obscured figure on the first issue's cover is Max Lord.

"Did I just kill your Martian Manhunter Lives optimism?"

J'Onn isn't going to die again. Deadman will sacrifice his life to clear all that up. I can't think of anyone else in the undead dozen they'd bother to toss to the lions after going through all that trouble over the resurrections.

R.E.B.E.L.S. has been hit and miss with me. Collecting the initial team took too long, only to toss them aside for latecomers like Strange and Comet, who are then treated as background characters themselves. Also, Star Conqueror the Barbarian is D.U.M.B., and I hate that they killed Stealth. On the other hand, I dig all the callbacks to the previous series (though I miss Lyrl the Megalomaniacal Infant,) the art's nice, Vril is always cool, and the revitalized original JLofA villains rule.

Finally, I don't want to turn comics into a reflection of Brian Bendis' worst excesses, but I could stand an issue a year of every comic turned over to the mundane. Super-heroes with dentists' appointments and playdates with other parents could be somewhat awesome.

I like the "everyday" when it's done well. Just think of all the fun JLI had when something as mundane as a cat wandering into the Embassy happened. (Which, I must add, they cross-cut with other plot points, which is why the mundane didn't fall flat in that instance.)

"J'Onn isn't going to die again. Deadman will sacrifice his life to clear all that up." Care to make it interesting? Even though I think you're probably right, my gut says otherwise. I'm only seeing doom and gloom a year from now.

I didn't like Starro-as-humanoid or whatever he was. I never read the previous series so I had no idea what to expect. I just picked it up looking for Adam Strange. Starfire's set to make an appearance...now if only Animal Man could stop by to complete the 52 trio.

I agree, that it will likely be as "Formerly know as..." was, where J'onn is too busy being a "real" superhero to be active in the JLI shenanigans. Which was fun in it's own way, but actually bothers me a bit too. I'd rather see the early issues mix of hard hitting action and actual importance to the DCU (UN sanctions, crossover with Suicide Squad, the "Invasion!" issues). That was the stuff.

I'll still likely enjoy it far more than many recent stories (and certainly more than JL Robinson) but I fear this will be another JLI rehash shoved in it's own corner.

Oh, and I'm a sucker for alien barbarians, so Starro the Conqueror was OK in my book. I'm jazzed for Bedard on GLC.
