1990 Martian Manhunter art by Whilce Portacio

"This was a sketch Whilce did for me back when I worked for the Homage crew. A very long time ago! This was in 1990 so I believe it was around the time Whilce was post Punisher but pre X-Factor. Whilce was and is still one of my favorite artists. A true master." -Karl Altstaetter

I'd be OK with a Wilce Portacio Martian solo series. Well, Mini-series at least.

I friggin' loved Whilce Portacio during this period. As I mentioned last month, Jim Lee usurped him as my favorite artist after two years when Portacio took a hiatus. They were in close competition after Whilce came back for X-Factor, but then I took to Rob Liefeld for a bit, since he was the only hot artist I could ape. I'm duly embarrassed by that last bit.

I had no interest in Wetworks, and then Portacio picked up this odd habit of drawing everyone kind of ugly. It's like when George Perez had that period of trying to inappropriately photo reference every character, except Portacio has been drawing everybody to look like Jeremy Renner since about 1996. That could work for a Martian Manhunter series though, and the guy still has some thin credibility in the "kewl" department, so I'm in.

A little bit dark, and he looks so very serious. I especially love how the cape is rendered.

The McFarlane influence is apparent, but he thankfully didn't go full Spawn...
