2007 The National Colored Pencil Convention Sketch by Darwyn Cooke

If you've been reading this blog regularly on Friday nights, you likely know by now it usually isn't a very involved affair. By Friday, I'm pretty wiped out and/or beginning projects for other blogs or just plain out on the town. As much as I'd like to see Iron Man 2, we're in the "pooped" category. At least this will actually get published on Friday, instead of being backdated.

Anyway, here's another piece by the always nifty Darwyn Cooke, who hasn't made an appearance here in a while. It's another "Natural Martian," similar to this one, but in color. Man, I need to organize my sketch updates and revise the old ones to enlarge, a.s.a.p.

Anyway anyway, if you'd like some good reading tonight, might I suggest Crimson Lightning's Rogue Spotlight: Abra Kadabra? Dixon credits the Idol-Head with inspiring him to begin taking a closer look at the individual adversaries in the Flash's Rogues Gallery. Since the Scarlet Speedster practically invented the concept of a solo hero's foes being regarded as a group entity, Dixon has plenty of villains to play with in this new venture. Heck, I came up with the name Vile Menagerie specifically to offer distinction from the Rogues Gallery, a now-ubiquitous term employed by most heroes for their foils. I love me some rogues, and Dixon's turning the month of May over to Kadabra, including a delightfully creepy new banner. Increased frequency of visits from you all should be penciled onto calenders, especially if Dixon continues these villain spotlights. I'll be most looking forward to Captain Boomerang, myself...

I love how Darwyn never hesitates to draw his heroes smiling, which is why I have this poster framed on my wall. I really like Darwyn's verion of the natural Martian form, as well, and the smile just makes this sketch.

Generally speaking, I agree, but for some reason I don't like his Captain America very much. The shield-slinger looks best happy (never scowl, Steve,) but I think maybe Cooke's line is too smooth. He's swell on the Manhunter, though, and his Nick Fury rules.
