2008 JLA "Happy 50th Birthday, Todd Wilson" Page by Phil Hester

I don't know if Mr. Wilson celebrated Father's Day this weekend, but his 50th birthday looks to have been a blast. Not only were Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Batman, Hawkman, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, the Atom, and Green Lantern Hal Jordan in attendance, but that's a mighty big cake. I sure hope the Mighty Mite wiped his feet before tramping all over it. Cute, but unsanitary.

Update:
"This is the second sketch that has been drawn by Phil Hester from my comicartfans page and I must say that when a group of the guys from the local comic shop contacted Phil and asked him to do the sketch, I was deeply touched. It made my 50th birthday a memory never to be forgotten.

P.S.
I did have a great Father's Day...got to spend it with two of my three children and both of my granddaughters."

That's awesome! But just between you and me and a few hundred Martian Manhunter fans, Batman got you a cheap gift, right? That's how billionaires stay that way.

"Cute, but unsanitary." That made me think of my eighth(?) birthday where our cat got onto the table and pawed at the frosting while the cake was still in the kitchen, and my mother smoothed it out and turned to me and said, "No one will know." Becuase the guilt of watching family members eat cat-pawed cake (by a cat who was allowed outdoors, no less) I told my whole family--albeit a few years later at a different party.

And thus ends my completely non-sequitur commenting.

Also, Batman is the last person I'd want at a birthday party.

Prof. Haley, I hope you don't mind, but I edited your comment into the main post. It sounds like you've got a sweet bunch of guys at your shop. I gave a gift or two in my day to customers, but it honestly never would have occurred to me to put together something so elaborate as this!

Liss, I hope you'll be pleased to know that my upcoming Phil Hester commission follows standard precautions of face mask and gloves. No one in the animal kingdom in exempt from proper hygiene.

Ryan, I'm debating incorporating some of that interview into a post, but oooo he love to dance a little sidestep... "now they see me now they don't- I've come and gone and oooo I love to sweep around the wide step, cut a little swathe and lead the people on." Besides restating the obvious, Cornell's dodges were uncomfortably telling. Am I wrong in thinking he referenced a cartoon as his primary source of J'Onn J'Onzz information? Still, as I always, I appreciate knowing in advance where we're headed!

Frank: Yeah, the vibe I'm getting is that the tone and content of Stormwatch will be pretty dissimilar to the Manhunter from Mars tales of the '50s and '60s.

However, what I liked about the interview was the clues he dripped about the direction of the book: "They're not a superhero team. And they don't do superhero things. They do something in particular, and the Martian Manhunter being there really suits that."

Speculation? I think Stormwatch will either "watch the watchmen", acting as a secret police rounding up metahumans who can't be controlled or can't be taken down through the usual means, or Internal Affairs division of the Justice League; another idea is that they'll be responsible for alien/interstellar threats to Earth, as opposed to dealing with Earth-based conflicts.

Similar lines on my end, Ryan. At first I was thinking inter-dimensional police, given the likelihood of The Bleed and The Carrier being involved. However, Wildstorm was one of DC's last extant universes, and the Multiverse has been played out in recent years, so it seems likely they'll deal with a lot of WS integration business. White Martians and Daemonites are not dissimilar, but routing out Kherubim would be a twist. Super-team I.A. makes sense, but my feeling is J'Onn is investigating Stormwatch itself as the team watches, say, the JLA or sovereign nations.
