Martian Sightings for December, 2012

I haven't been able to bring myself to read Stormwatch for a few months now, because Milligan seemed to mark a substantial drop-off in the writing quality of an already bad book. I did finally skim #12 though, and it occurred to me that J'Onn J'Onzz might be the "secret" founder of the new Justice League who got busted mindwiping his teammates to help "get them ready." Just a thought as I plow through another month of solicitations carried by M'gann M'orzz in cartoon continuity...

So J'onn's been possibly mind-wiping colleagues? All this makes me think of is Zatanna. Just not right.

Yeah, well, yeah. Sucks.

Frank, it is hard to say what is going on. I think that an argument can be made that J'Onn would not have been able to mindwipe all the people who saw what happened in the first few issues of Justice League. (Considering how bad parts of it were, perhaps some readers would like a mindwipe.)

For Stormwatch #12, I would have to hope that there is a good explanation and that J'Onn is mindwiping people to protect them from something hideous as well as carrying about his "mission." I only hope that there is an incredible payoff here from DC editorial.

Will, I was thinking more like the 1962, 1977 and post-Crisis JLA formation retcons. Most specifically the 1977 one, since that involved a version of the League coming together to combat a Pale Martian "invasion." J'Onn could have been a part of the group then, only to mindwipe everyone to conceal the existence of his people.

Frank, that would work. J'Onn may have decided that it was best for the League not to know that there were other Martians. Still, there should be a good reason behind this. (Perhaps J'Onn worked within the Martian invaders, helped stop them and the League misunderstood his actions. Somehow, this current league seems to shoot first and aim later.)

You guys are so much better at rationalizing all this than I am. I'm just too darn pessimistic when I hear "J'onn" and "mindwipe" in the same sentence. Maybe it won't be so bad after all.

Or maybe just stick to reprints. The "Last Angry God" story in the next JLA Showcase Presents isn't much (okay, it stinks), but at least J'Onn doesn't "mindwipe" anyone. And a certain Adam Strange fan might enjoy another story reprinted in the same volume.
