2002 the Martian Manhunter by Joseph "zeruch" Arruda

I usually try to leave a lot of material from the original site when I borrow stuff for here, but since my browser keeps throwing up invalid security certificate warnings, you might think twice before enlarging/visiting. The artist's text...

So I was rummaging in sketchbooks and found a few pencil sketches of various DC Comics characters from 2002. I had this idea back then to re-design several dozen of them, but only four seem to have gotten beyond thumbnails, and those were the most conservatively kept to their known appearance.

I decided (at least with this one) to give them a quick ink (analog) and color (digitally).

I know the pose is somewhat odd (it looks like he’s doing a diagonal cannonball dive into an imaginary pool) but hey, it’s based off a doodle, and I still like how it turned out.

Comic book material (at least the traditional costumed hero variety) offer simple tropes that can easily be manipulated into many variations, and occupy a kind of guilty pleasure for me….at least they would, if I actually felt any guilt about not always working on “serious” material.

I never thought to go gray, and it works so well I didn't even notice at first. I also like the Walt Simonson meets Mike Mignola meets Kent Williams styling.

LissBirds, I was reading a review of Batman Brave and The Bold 18 and it said they were fighting a "White Martian General named Malefic" In the story did they write Malefic as a White Martian instead of a Green?

It looks amazing. I wish I had some artistic bones in me

Agreed, this is pretty cool. If a JLA movie used this color scheme (or just muted the hell out of it) I wouldn't be that angry.

Anonymous: Yep, they wrote Malefic as White instead of Green. It was kind of a mashup between the 90's Malefic and Commander Blanx. That part I thought was interesting.

Hmm...gray could work for his cape. I never thought of that, either. It's kind of so obvious we never thought of it. Though with Bats holding the market on gray, I doubt it would happen. Not sure I like this pose, though...not sure what that body language is saying.

Okay, just went back and noticed the bit about the pose being from a doodle. Must read more thoroughly before posting in the future...

Well well, thanks for noticing. And I think I may have the certificate issues on zeruch.net fixed (but I may not, as it's been a recurring problem with something I misconfigured nd may have to reinstall WP from scratch and fix DNS,etc).

Otherwise, http://zeruch.deviantart.com has the rest of my scribblings.

Of not, you named one artist I admire immensely (Williams) and two that have been perennial favorites (Simonson and Mignola). I am flattered to have anything of mine be interpreted as hinting at all three!
