I had a very busy day, but also felt like I rested up after, and felt a swell of energy going into the night. I spent it replying to the Fanholes Podcast's final episode covering the "Titans Hunt" story arc. During that effort, I began to feel quite unwell, and at times thought that I may vomit. This was no fault of the Fanholes (the language is saucy, if you're the easily offended type,) but it did much diminish any ambitions that I had here. I also wasted a bunch of time trying to find a New Titans tie-in appearance, but that well was very dry, pre-Miss Martian.
Anyway, here's a comic store poster advertizing a Martian Marvel action figure that I ordered for my shop and have lovingly kept with me ever since. I don't adore it as much as my childhood Super Powers or my adult Hasbro JLA 9" Doll (I own at least 3, two boxed,) but it's higher than 1998 Hasbro. Yes, even with DC Direct's very McFarlanesque tendency to break at joints with the slightest provocation (multiple immobilizing knee surgeries.) I probably hung this one in my store, but not definitely. I don't seem to have kept a copy. Sorry that they of course had to feature him with "The Usurper" (though I've softened on Reddy over the years. By the way, some dude is on eBay selling "mini-posters" that are just pages of ripped out of the 2005 San Diego Comic-Con International program book, featured in our own art gallery.

Justice League Vol. 1 (2018) Solicitation

Justice League Vol. 1It's been nearly half a year since my last post, due to both general burnout and my reading very little mainstream DC/Marvel output in recent years. Truth to tell, there were many years there where I kept buying Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman product out of devotion to the characters and blogs without ever bothering to read them. They're still sitting in boxes. For this reason, I can't tell you a) a first person perspective on how the New 52 Martian Manhunter series ended; b) where he's turned up in the year or two since, or c) what he's been up to since his return in the most recent issue of Dark Nights: Metal. Well, okay, he rescued Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Mr. Terrific from imprisonment, they all fought Starro off-panel, and then they got ambushed by those parallel universe lowercase "b" bizarro Batman/Justice Leaguer mash-ups. That story is about to spin-off into an event mini-series called Justice League: No Justice where everybody including J'Onn J'Onzz gets a sucky group-themed new costume and a bunch of relaunches get set up.

Visionary author Scott Snyder makes his mark on DC's most legendary team in Justice League Vol. 1!
Spinning out of the cataclysmic events of Dark Nights: Metal and the universe-defining No Justice, the core members of the Justice League--Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and more--are finally reunited!
The cosmos suddenly opens up to new threats that the Justice League could not imagine! As Lex Luthor and Batman race to solve a mystery going back to the beginning of the DCU, the rest of the League dive deep into new corners of their own mythologies!
One of the most critically acclaimed authors of his generation finally scribes DC's flagship title in Justice League Vol. 1! Collects Justice League #1-6.
Speaking of which, here's the sorta-not-really "leaked" solicitation for a collection of the 2018 relaunch of Justice League. They're folding all the current JLA series back into one, putting on notable talent, and giving us virtually all of the actual League founders on the same team again. Only Hal Jordan is excluded, but the Green Lantern Corps is still represented by John Stewart, who is the superior character anyway. Even the Black Canary of the '10s, Cyborg, is sticking around. But most importantly, the Manhunter from Mars is finally on the core team again for the first time since Infinite Crisis twelve years ago. Again, this blog is now a decade old, and that has never been the case across its entire existence. And they're keeping the New 52 redesign I really like, even if you guys all seem to have more mixed feelings about it.
Is this enough to get me to buy monthly floppies again? I've been doing that for a while, but they're of the more economical Alterna Comics variety, not this $4 nonsense. Christopher Priest taking over was a much greater temptation, if only for the new adventures of Glenn Gammeron, but we all knew the minute they put a black man in charge of the book that the countdown clock was ticking on that run. Barring some sort of J'Onnaissance, I won't even be picking up the trades. I'm just happy to see the Alien Atlas afforded some respect and acknowledgement again, plus I didn't want to have a reason to hold resentment towards Victor Stone.

The Comic Reader #183 (September, 1980)
It should be evident to anyone who has read my blogs or listened to my podcasts that I'm a big comic reader. However, I'm not big on The Comic Reader, one of if not the longest lived fanzines of the medium (unlike the much earlier Alter Ego, which became a prozine and then a proper magazine.) The publication was always slight on editorial content, likely due to a lack of access to the big companies and their talent, as well as its dependence on their good graces for the book's main service to the community, solicitation art & copy. For instance, the specific issue being covered today ran 60 pages and change, 13 of which were paid advertisements, 18 were newspaper strip reprints, 3 well drawn but unfunny animal strips, and 1 a photo comic featuring the guys who did those strips that actually is kind of funny. Pretty near everything else looks like an early Previews catalog.

That said, the magazine pioneered the use of original full color professional cover art, and has shown much love to J'onn J'onzz in that regard, including issues 159, #197, #219 and this number right here, described inside as "The original JLA as portrayed by new DC inker Dennis Jensen, and Supergirl and Batgirl by TCR cover artist Bob Staszak." This was actually around the time the Manhunter from Mars saw a sharp uptick in usage, including appearances in Justice League of America and DC Comics Presents, with black and white cover art from the second part of Mongul arc (featuring Supergirl) displayed inside. Detective Comics #500 is also discussed, including "Paul Levitz and Joe Kubert do a HAWKMAN story which investigates the 'Strange Death of Dr. Erdel,' the man who brought J'onn J'onzz to Earth." There's also the brief mention that "Polygram Films has announced that BATMAN is on their release schedule for 1982. Michael Uslan and Ben Melnicker are the producers named."
Over at Marvel, their graphic novel line was meant to begin with an X-Men story by Claremont, Byrne & Austin, while Frank Miller was set to both draw AND write an issue of DAREDEVIL "featuring a new villain called Electra." Their spelling. Did that Daredevil back-up strip "The Ninja" by Hama and Simonson ever happen? Or the Howard the Duck radio show?
Wooo-- there's a fan letter that references an episode of Tomorrow with Tom Snyder that featured a co-interview of Stan Lee and Carmine Infantino! Wait-- I just did a bit of research, and apparently only audio of the episode still exists, and includes Julie Schwartz! Why has no one leaked this to YouTube?
Hey, remember when comic conventions only had one guest? There's a show in here with just Walt Simonson and the dude who played Twiki, and I should have asked Howard Chaykin how his gig in Indiana went when I talked to him this weekend (all three have done Houston shows in the past year.) Say, the top 100 comics are listed her! Okay, forget what I said earlier-- these later issues of the magazine are actually neat. I bought a few issues for a few bucks at Amazing Houston, and if anything Alien Atlas appears, I'll pass it along...

Martian Manhunter
CONVERGENCE: JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1Marz doesn't do funny, and Manley isn't known for comedy either, so this will presumably be a serious JLI ala "Teasdale Imperative," the Despero arc, and "Breakdowns." I obviously love J'Onn and really like this incarnation of Captain Atom. Going to be difficult to tolerate Red Tornado, though.I wonder if Marz will do the laid back Guy Gardner of his Green Lantern days, or do the brain-addled creep we enjoyed in the good old days?

STARRING HEROES FROM ZERO HOUR! Ted Kord, Martian Manhunter, Fire and Ice star as the levity of the JLI team collides with the severity of the world of Kingdom Come!
CONVERGENCE: JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #2It occurs to me that circa Zero Hour, J'Onn was running the Task Force, so the smaller team that includes the Satellite Era usurper makes more sense if this is actually that. Kingdom Come though. Ugh. Also, those "Chip Kidd" covers where he takes two near identical panels of Ice by Marc Campos and throws a gradient over half of it. The Worst. Nobody buy those, okay?

CONVERGENCE: JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #1One of the Convergence titles I'm most looking forward to, and I'm buying about nine of them. Nicieza and Chriscross seem like a swell fit for a multicultural team that has built-in poignance when used in retrospect. Plus I just really dig much of this line-up, and hope to see some of their unrealized interpersonal chemistry played up.

STARRING HEROES FROM CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS! With their heavy hitters sidelined, Elongated Man must lead the much-maligned “Detroit Justice League” against the overwhelming power of the heroes from the Tangent Universe!
CONVERGENCE: JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #2I really like the perspective on the cover to #2. Not sure why Ralph is leading instead of Arthur or J'Onn, but I can see a run-in with the Tangent Universe holding my interest.

JLA VOL. 7 TPThe nadir of the best Justice League volume ever-- the beginning of the end, basically. The lameness of a Kanjar Ro revamp, three issues of super-White Supremacists that barely troubled a low powered JLTF, a Lex-as-Bush analogue nightmare story, and four issues of guest creator filler previously deemed unworthy of trade paperback collections. The highest point of this low fare was "Trial By Fire," which I hated, but lots of folks were impressed by Fernus and the Plastic Man showpiece.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #7Dadgummit! A second straight Andrew Robinson cover without J'Onn J'Onzz, or even the JLU this time. Well that's okay, since Darwyn Cooke was not only incline to feature the Manhunter from Mars on a second cover this month, but to give us his swank take on the New 52 version!

The Infinitus Saga continues as the JLU battles the Legion of Super-Heroes over the fate of the innocent alien who may grow up to destroy the 31st century!
JUSTICE LEAGUE #37Sometimes, I don't quite know what to make of Darwyn Cooke, but then he'll do a variant cover so good I list an issue here that I'm fairly certain will not feature J'onn J'onn, because it's so darn good. While Cooke includes later Leaguers in Silver Age attire Black Canary and Green Arrow, the very prominent appearance of the Alien Atlas as the only full figure and flying character fairly screams "still a founder of the Magnificent Seven." At the same time, Cooke acknowledges the New 52 status quo by offering Cyborg as one of the most visible heroes on the cover, and manages to give him a more classic, iconic look. The guy's aces!

Marvel seems to have abandoned their Essential editions for full color "Epic Collections" that cost at least twice as much for fewer pages and stick to more mainstream tastes. I've yet to buy an "Epic," no Essential in a year, but I just got the Showcase Presents for Men of War and Super Friends a few months ago (about the only money of mine DC can still rely upon.) Anyway, Martian Manhunter appears here in three consecutive issues, mostly related to Millennium tie-ins.

JLA VOL. 6 TPIt seems like you cannot overvalue the JLA brand. DC is still drawing ducats a decade and change removed from the dull, distancing Kelly/Mahnke run by repackaging the issues as part of a more comprehensive collection under that seemingly evergreen banner. Are any of the trades from the Meltzer/McDuffie/Robinson JLofA volume still in print? This edition covers the launch of this creative team's run with the so-so "Golden Perfect" and the interminable "Obsidian Age," plus peripheral tales.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #4It's funny to see Equinox attacked by the same blacked out solicitation figures she started out as on the early censored version of the debut issue's cover. Say, did you know Equinox was also the name of Power Girl's stupid insta-adult son that appeared at the end of one awful Gerard Jones storyline and was never mentioned again? Wasn't that Hal Jordan's lovechild. Anyway, forget I said anything. It just reminds me that Power Girl slept with Hal Jordan, which is sad.

Justice League Canada’s first adventure comes to an explosive end!
MARTIAN MANHUNTER: RINGS OF SATURN TPGiven that the first volume sold less than 900 copies, I wasn't sure if the previously planned follow-up was still going to happen. Then again, that's still about $4000 profit, which sad to say, is probably alright money for a no frills reprint in the 2014 market. #10 has nice art and a despicable story. The collection editor was smarter than I gave credit for, combining #1,000,000 with its Hitch-in-his-prime continuation story in #11. Gypsy and some pre-fashionable zombie heroes turn up in #12. #13-16 is the well liked space opera story arc that gives the trade its title. #17 is a resolved-in-one, as it tied up story threads from a year prior running in this title, Chase, and various Secret Files & Origins strips.

Martian Sightings for July & September, 2014
Martian Manhunter
"Over the past three years, DC Comics has established September as a very important month at the publisher -- and as revealed on Newsarama, they're looking to keep that momentum going with each of their mainline titles set to flash-forward five years into the potential future, along with the return of "Villains Month"-style lenticular covers. The issues will tie-in to DC's upcoming weekly series "The New 52: Futures End," which debuts in May..."Because of the delays and allocations that came with last year's gimmick covers, DC is advance soliciting these September shipping books to better establish demand for setting their print runs. No creative team information or cover images are currently available.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: FUTURES END #1I can't get excited about yet another possible future that will not ultimately come to pass, but if the past set here is in line with New 52 continuity, this reestablishes J'Onn J'Onzz as being active well before any other major DC hero. Also, it wraps a dangling plot thread from Stormwatch, and provides motive for a probable heel turn from the Alien Atlas even after Futures End resolves. At this point, I'm fine with that, because I'm bored with a dead Mars and one or two other "last survivors" at a time, plus the Manhunter gets a significant event plot of his own for once. I'm most excited to see if any of our Comrades/Menagerie members turn up.

The mystery of the Martian Manhunter is revealed at last as his decades-long plan for world domination comes to fruition! Continues in this month’s JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED: FUTURES END #1!
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED: FUTURES END #1Again, this is an Elseworlds wrapped in a Tangent stuffed in a Tales of the Dead Earth. I'd like to think Futures End is a self-aware satire of the dreck DC's published as the New 52, going all Flashpoint again before returning to the old continuity. I'm confident that gives DC far too much credit, and even if that were the intention, we'd still have the same worn out talent and crumby editorial machine in place that had already ground out most of my enthusiasm for DC for a decade prior. So by all means, give us an evil Martian Manhunter, his army of invaders, and a clean break for me to stop concerning myself with anything DC publishes until they decide to stop acting like Heroes World Marvel of the late '90s. And thank you for containing this story in just the two issues. These, I can maybe buy.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #3I'm going to go out on a limb and say they kill Adam Strange so Alanna can't ever marry him (Didio forbid!) but can take his place (which was already alluded to when the book was in the planning stages.) Say, why does Supergirl have to get Byth's tongue? Also, Animal Man's costume makes him look as most like a dolphin/whale, but I really don't see any "animal" in there. He's more like "Bob Sled: The Sleigher."

Martian Manhunter
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #2This sounds like the Martian Manhunter team book I bought a year each worth of two titles to get, but didn't. I'm looking forward to the trade paperback collection of this. Sometime in mid-2015, based on a solicitation later in this post. DC's Silver Age sci-fi heroes addressing like villains in the manner seen in the classic JLA stories, whether than means Fox/Sekowsky or Morrison/Porter to you? That's exciting to hear, even if Zuko Lobo is involved. Man, either Hawkman is much, much more powerful in the New 52, or more likely, Lobo is as fierce as he currently looks. Tell me again why DC thinks decking out characters in illuminated garb like children's sneakers isn't desperately clueless, 'cuz I don't see it any other way.

What is their ultimate mission? And who is pulling the strings? Find out in this collection of the first five issues of the new series as the team takes on the Secret Society of Super-Villains!
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE VOL. 1: BREACH TPSpeaking of which, I only got through the first five issues, with the rest sitting in the to-read pile, but I liked them and hear the rest are up to snuff. Not much J'Onn J'Onzz, but this was the home of New 52 Gypsy and Dale Gunn. Hope that's not the cover they're going with, though. In a ten issue run, I can think of five better choices. By the way, dig how the price per issue breaks down to $1.70. That's a late '80s cover price, ya'll.

Martian Sightings for May, 2014
Martian Manhunter
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #1Even at "half-style," McKone's take on the Alien Atlas has me looking forward to picking up this trade. That cannot be the final coloring, though. While I find modern coloring a bit busy, I also recognize that this looks to have been done by an editor using fills in MS Paint. I do do this for Vile Menagerie entries, y'know. As with the final issues of Justice League of America, the foregrounding of Stargirl over J'Onn J'Onzz makes it easy to toss this into the "read whenever" pile.

2014 LEGO Martian Manhunter Minifigure March Toy Offer

I was off work today, but I agreed to a couple of early bird days starting tomorrow. After my usual exceedingly long reply to the latest Who's Who Podcast, I was all like "blogging is for losers" and caught up with True Detective instead (it finally gets moving with episode three.) I knew I needed to knock something of little depth out as quickly as possible, but still bothered to check my neglected "official" email. Lo and behold, one of our readers had sent me something that fit my needs. I don't know if Alexi is a public figure (seems likely per Google, but still) so I won't use his full name, but he alerted me to the fact that the Alien Atlas was finally going to get the Lego Minifig treatment. Folks seem excited to finally complete the "Magnificent Seven" JLA in Lego form, though I hasten to note that this is the New 52 version, so you'll still have to wait for Cyborg.
Before they came out with the large Avengers movie Hulk, they released him as a Minifig with a more '70stastic look, so I'm hopeful we'll get a Silver Age/Classic Manhunter from Mars at some point in the future. I do like the New 52 design though, and it translated very well to brick. I am a tad perturbed that my Lego obsessed girlfriend managed to miss this, but since she's the one who'll be spending the $75+ to get the "free" toy within the month of March 2014, I can't exactly hold a grudge. Also, I put together a Lego B'rett with her spare parts a few years ago, which I really ought to photograph and digitally customize for the blog. Or not. We'll see.

FINAL ISSUE
In the wake of FOREVER EVIL, the Justice League of America’s mission has come to an end – so where do they go from here? No one’s survival is assured! This issue is also offered as a combo pack edition with a redemption code for a digital download of this issue.
So hey, when you were buying 50+ variant covers for the debut issue and 3+ for every consecutive issue, did you know that you were investing in a 14 issue maxi-series by two different series writers and probably a dozen series artists in which nine issues were direct branded tie-ins to two crossovers (not counting the four Villains' Month stunt issues that really had little to nothing to do with the title?) I've bought every properly numbered issue, but only bothered to read four or so. Those Martian Manhunter back-ups sure were a disappointment, since what little they revealed about the character wasn't to my liking, but mostly they were just pointless expansions of the lead stories. I've been flipping through the Forever Evil tie-ins, and after reading the first, it seems like the subsequent ones spin their wheels in the exact same mud where I left off. Maybe Geoff Johns started this with the best intentions, and got forced off by Diane Nelson & company, but this entire volume turned out to be meandering ancillary material for other projects, and now we get some half-assed coda? And the sad truth is, since I'd already started following this crap, I'd have probably bought #15 by the next creative team. Luckily, DC had the courage/greed to give me a jumping-off point instead, and I'm frigging taking it.

Top comics writer Jeff Lemire teams with superstar artist Mike McKone for the all-new monthly series JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED, starring the new team of powerful heroes Earth calls Justice League Canada!
In the aftermath of FOREVER EVIL, Adam Strange is caught up in an adventure across the far reaches of the cosmos that will unite an unexpected team of heroes including Supergirl, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter and Animal Man – but if they’re on the team, who exactly is Canadian? Plus: Don’t miss the debut of a new Canadian hero who will have a huge effect on the group!
Even after my fairly definitive rant about how I wasn't going to buy this book, I still had a "but" in my back pocket. Maybe the price would come down to $2.99? Maybe there would be a tie-in Martian Manhunter book? Nope. I still like Mike McKone's new art style, which reminds me of Dusty Abell, but y'know, I didn't like Abell as much as classic McKone, knowwhatImean? I'm guessing the JLU will take part in the start of a new Rann-Thangar War, which would explain Hawkman's absence from the cover but clear involvement per the synopsis. I definitely want to see the Alien Atlas all up in that, so when the trade paperback arrives, I'll probably be there. Until they get around to the Secret Origins issue for the Sleuth from Outer Space, I'm done with DC monthlies.
By the way, in the final issue of the series, Stormwatch is rebooting to its New 52 relaunch incarnation of Adam-One, Jenny Quantum, the Engineer, Apollo and Gimpy Midnighter. Maybe they'll use the weekly event series Future's End to do the stuff they meant to do three years ago?
