2007 The Justice League of America Commission by Paul Smith

An absolutely stunning piece by the famed artist of Uncanny X-Men and The Golden Age. You absolutely must enlarge this! Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman cheerfully discussing the grand spectacle! Zatanna thanked by Green Lantern Hal Jordan and the Barry Allen Flash after risking all! The Atom (Ray Palmer) blocking Ollie "Green Arrow" Queen's attempt to lay the mac on Black Canary. Hawkman and J'Onn J'Onzz coming in from off stage-- were they late to the party, briefly taken out of play, or too uptight to presume the battle was entirely done? My guess: Searching for Aquaman, whose absence is conspicuous!

There is more humanity in this than in 99.9% of what DC or Marvel have ever published. The cartoonist gods were with Paul Smith when he did this one.

Sorry, I've been sick and largely off-line. I've replied now.

Oddly, I never got the impression that J'Onn and Katar were friends. Friendly, sure, but never chums, ole buddy ole pal. That whole "Oh yes, it stinks that your planet was hit with an Equalizing Plague. Could be worse, you know, your planet could be DEAD" and all.

By my reckoning, you're absolutely correct, Luke! Hawkman's joined the JLofA at around the same time J'Onn was ever-so-slowly leaving, and their few interactions over the years have never been terribly warm. They even had a team-up on the tail end of the '90s Hawkman series where they like to have killed one another.
