In a sweet find by Idol-Head regular mathematicscore, here's Pat Gleason's contribution to the enormous mural that lines the walls of DC's West Coast offices, featured back in May on the Patrick Gleason Art blog.
The icing on the cake (or should I say Choc-o) was that I would be getting to draw one of my favorite DCU heros; Martian Manhunter. I liked John from the start. First working on him with Doug Mahnke on an issue of the regular series... then on my own as a character in JLA Welcome to The Working Week...somewhere in there was a pin-up featuring Green Arows chili recipe... And now that I think of it, he's had a cameo in probably every other book I've worked on at DC. Aquaman, Green Lantern Corps and most recently his own story line in Brightest Day... I'm not going to go into all that I love about the character right now, but let's just say there were times he reminded me of how I used to feel when I first saw Superman... Anyway I enjoyed inking my mural section (below) which is something I tend not to do unless there is a deadline crunch. In this case I took my time and enjoyed myself. In the end I was pretty happy with how it turned out.Kind words and swell art! Here's a too tiny glimpse of it in color...
Notice, as I failed to at first, that Gleason drew a Brightest Day Manhunter that was later converted to the New 52...
I hadn't made the connection with the costume swap from original to color.
It's too bad they had to ruin that pretty piece of black-and-white art by painting New 52 on top of it.
I didn't notice that Gleason had drawn the Brightest Day costume, only to have it later DC New'd. Comparing the two, I'd prefer a hybrid to any one over the other. I miss the collar and the looser cape, but not the x-straps or the cabochon. The temple notches are alright, and I love the gray/blue "pie" chest piece. The dhoti is awkward, and I see that they mistakenly kept the cavalier boots.
Yeah, no one seems to get Jim Lee's intent of a looser pant in boots, Cossack look. Ah well, at least it's not Gold armbands.
